For maximum holding power and resistance to wind uplift, while also allowing for absorption of kinetic and seismic energy, with all types of roofing tiles, over any type of roof deck material, to any slope.
Use the Tyle-Tye® Strap System as manufactured by Newport Tool & Fastener Company, Inc., Anaheim, California. Tyle-Tye® Strap is manufactured from 1" wide X 24 ga. (.024") Type 304A stainless steel strap conforming to ASTM A240, or 1" wide X 24 ga. (.024") galvanized steel strap conforming to ASTM A641.
The strap is a continuous metal strip (10 foot long, 10 pieces/bundle) with punched out slots every four inches to connect each piece of roofing tile and anchor holes every four inches to allow for any field fabrication of the strap to nail, screw or compression spike to wood, metal or concrete decks.
The Tyle-Tye® Strap is anchored to the wood deck by means of the double plate anchor system encompassing two 3 diameter stamped plates of either stainless steel or galvalume using stainless steel or coated steel deck screws of appropriate length. For structural concrete decks use double plate anchor system with either stainless steel or galvalume plates using stainless steel or carbon steel compression spike fastener of appropriate length. For insulated steel decks, use the double plate anchor system with either stainless steel or galvalume plates using stainless steel or coated steel deck screw of appropriate length. The recommended anchor spacing for each row of Tyle-Tye Strap is five feet. All anchoring points shall be sealed with Tyle-Tye® Chatter Damper.
The Tyle-Tye® Strap Individual roof tiles are attached to the Tyle-Tye® Strap in the following ways:
1. CONNECTORS: Each tile is fastened to the strap using a pre-formed wire connecting piece with a longitudinally oriented hook for grabbing the butt end of the tile, and a stem portion inserted into one of the slots in the metal fastening strip. The stem that is inserted into the slot is then bent over by a labor saving single 180-degree bend. When installed, the fastening system holds each tile in two places; at the butt end via the hook, and at the opening in the tile where the connector piece passes through. Tyle-Tye® Connectors are manufactured from (.090" dia.) Type 304 Stainless Steel conforming to AISI-304, or 12ga. (.105" dia.) Galvanized Steel conforming to ASTM 641-92.
2. CONNECTORS w/o NOSE HOOK: Same as above, but without the nose hook end. This part functions the same as a regular connector but allows the installer to stagger the headlap and exposure of the roof tile. These connectors are quick to install, are manufactured from the same materials, but should not be used in high wind or seismic zones 3 and 4.
3. TIE WIRES: Tie wire, the same as are used for the Twisted Wire Tyle-Tye® system, work well with the Tyle-Tye® Strap system and are available in lengths of 18 and 28 stainless steel, and 18 and 31 galvanized steel. Use three full revolutions for each tie point. This type of tie wire can be pre-tied into the tile before loading onto the roof.
4. TIE RODS: These connectors are made from 13 ga. (.090" dia.) Type 304 stainless steel or 12 ga. (.105" dia.) galvanized steel and available in all lengths. A simple 180-degree bend of the Tie Rod connects the tile fast and securely into the Tyle-Tye® Strap System.
*Use Connectors, Tie Rods, tie wires and/or ring shank, large head (minimum 5/16") nails, and Tyle-Tye® Chatter Damper (3/8" bead at the laps) for rake and ridge tiles. Rake tiles require two nails per tile of sufficient length to penetrate the deck or rake board a minimum of 3/4".
****Additional holding capacity can be achieved with hurricane side clips for clay "S" tiles and all concrete roof tiles with a interlock channel (all field tiles, or first three courses, or minimum eave coarse), with wire, nails, screws and adhesive at the ridge, eave, and rake, and/or with Tyle-Tye® Chatter Damper adhesive at the head laps.
Newport Fastener holds US Patent 5921045 for the Tyle-Tye® Strap.
